Will Blink Cameras Work With myQ?

Both Blink and myQ are popular brands in different categories. Blink is known for smart video doorbells, as well as indoor and outdoor cameras. On the other hand, myQ is popular for smart garage door solutions. The company manufactures smart garage door openers, smart garage sensors, and a smart garage door camera. Their products integrate perfectly, resulting in a smart garage door system that is more solid, secure, and convenient.

But how about the two brands? In other words, will Blink cameras work with myQ?

The short answer is yes. You can integrate your Blink cameras with your myQ smart garage door system, not directly though, because Blink and myQ don’t support each other by default.

So, how do you do it? You use the If This Then That (IFTTT) service or the SimpleCommands app. The former is offered by a company known as IFTTT, which is based in San Francisco, California, USA. On the other hand, the latter is an app provided by an entity known as “SIMPLECOMMANDS, Inc.”, which is located in Massachusetts, United States.

1. The If This Then That Service (IFTTT)

IFTTT is a web-based service that allows you to pair third-party devices and apps together. For instance, you could use it to make your Blink camera(s) and myQ garage opener or any other device work together. This is because it supports both brands i.e Blink and myQ as indicated on the product page.

Here’s how to do it;

  • Download the myQ app onto your phone.
  • Launch the app and create an account.
  • Go to IFTTT and sign in to the website with your myQ account.
  • Type Blink in the search bar under “Explore.”
  • Click Blink or Blink Europe, depending on your location.
  • Scroll down to “Connect Blink to these services and more”.
  • Click “myQ”.

To help you get started, the website shows you popular Blink and MyQ workflows integrations and automation options you can try.

For example, you can integrate your Blink camera(s) with your myQ smart garage door opener and set the system such that when the myQ garage door opener opens the garage door, the system disarms the Blink camera and the other way round.

2. The SimpleCommands App

The Simplecommands app supports both Blink and myQ products and services. It serves the same purpose as IFTTT—lets you pair and integrate third-party devices and apps. That means you can use it to make your Blink camera work with your myQ garage door opener.

You can schedule and automate your Blink-myQ system using custom routines such that it triggers according to how you want it to.

Here’s how to do it;

  • Download the SimpleCommands app onto your phone.
  • Launch the app and create an account.
  • Download the Home Assistant app onto your phone. This is the app through which you will be able to integrate with myQ, courtesy of the SimpleCommands app.
  • Launch the Home Assistant app and create an account.
  • Log into your SimpleCommands app account.
  • Scroll down the page and click to add myQ openers.
  • Enter your myQ email and password below to connect your myQ garage door opener to the SimpleCommands app.
  • Once you connect the garage door opener to the SimpleCommands app, the next step is to connect the Home Assistant app to this app. Click to add Home Assistant, entering your access token.

Blink works with Home Assistant, a piece of software that acts as a controller hub that allows you to pair and integrate multiple smart devices across brands into a single smart ecosystem.

Meaning, once you connect the Home Assistant app to the SimpleCommands app successfully, you can now easily integrate your Blink camera with your myQ garage door opener on the SimpleCommands platform, pairing them such that they work together as a single unit.

Final Thoughts

Is Blink camera compatible with myQ? Unfortunately, not, even though you can smartly integrate and pair the two devices to get the most out of your garage automation system. You can do that either through IFTTT or the SimpleCommands app. Each method can be involved, but if you are a bit techno-savvy, you should be able to do it successfully. Otherwise, I think it could have been great if both brands could integrate by default.
